Reset BIOS password on a Dell D610 (Solved)

Seeing as I work in technology, that obviously means I’m the first port of call for friends/relatives with any kind of computer issue.
A couple of weeks ago, one of my wifes friends asked if I could take a look at her lappy – a Dell D610.
She hadn’t used it for a few years as she got a newer lappy, now couldn’t remember her password which left her husband SOoL when he wanted to take it with him whilst he’s away with work.  To make things a little less straight forward, there were a bunch of photos on it of their kids when they were younger, so I couldn’t simply reinstall the OS and go.
Getting the pics off was pretty easy – Re-Installing the OS was not.
I managed to get the photos off with my trusty 3.5″IDE->USB adaptor.  Took the disk out, hooked it up to my MBP and copied them off.  Well, it wasn’t quite that simple as I didn’t realise OS X wouldn’t search an NTFS drive (probably something to do with spotlight writing the index but being unable to write to NTFS natively).  After a bit of driver wrangling, I managed to get the device to show up in Windows 7 under VMWare Fusion and quickly found the pics.
Right, just the OS to go.
I burned an iso of XP with SP3 slipstreamed in and went about trying to get the lappy to boot from CD.
Once I realised that the boot menu was having no effect, I checked out the BIOS.  Yup, completely locked out with an admin password.  This meant I couldn’t change the boot priority or anything at all.
Bugger.
A bunch of Googling turned me on to a method of wiping the BIOS admin password completely by shorting out the EEPROM.
It took me a while to work it out and I absolutely refused to pay the jackass with the youtube video promising to show you how to do it for a fee.
So, in the interests of freedom of information, here is how to clear/reset/remove the BIOS password on a Dell D610.
Notes and disclaimer:
This worked for me.  If it doesn’t work for you, i’m not responsible for that.
You will be cutting metal from the casing.  You need to be careful not to leave any residue on the motherboard incase it shorts anything out.
As part of the process, your machines service tag details will also be cleared.
1. Get your BIOS locked Dell D610.
2. Get a paperclip or safety pin.
3. Get a phillips or crosshead screwdriver and some metal cutters (heavy duty wire cutters should do it).
4. Remove the power supply, battery, CD drive and HDD.
5. Unscrew pretty much all of the screws on the bottom of the D610.
6. Remove the bottom case.
7. With the rear of the laptop closest to you, you should see a white label covering the modem on your left.  There should be some black plastic covering which stops the CMOS from touching the motherboard.
8. Just above that, there are some holes in the metal casing. You need to access a chip underneath that area.

9. CAREFULLY remove the metal.

10. Take your paper clip and prepare to short out the two pins 2nd from the left.
11. Connect the power supply and power on whilst shorting out those pins for about 5 secs.
12. If you are doing it right you’ll hear the fan kick in.
13. This message will then show on the screen.

14. You can either press FN+x or let it reboot on it’s own..
15. Now you will be able to go to the BIOS (Press F2) and make whatever changes you need.
16. Reassemble the case
It’s actually a pretty simple process once you know what chip is where, although you must be extremely careful when cutting the casing.
I hope that helps someone and saves them a few bucks.

ഇത് മലാല യൂസുഫ്‌ സായിയുടെ വാക്കുകള്‍ .കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ വാര്‍ത്തയില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന പാകിസ്ഥാനിലെ പതിനാലുകാരിയായ മലാല കഴിഞ്ഞ ജനുവരി മൂന്നിനു എഴുതിയ ബ്ലോഗിലെ വരികള്‍ .അതെഴുതിയപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു നാള്‍ ഈ ദുസ്വപ്നം തനിക്ക് വന്നു പെടുമെന്ന് അവള്‍ കരുതിയിരിക്കണം.പക്ഷെ,അത് ഇത്ര പെട്ടെന്നാവുമെന്നു അവള്‍ ഓര്‍ത്തു കാണില്ല.

പാകിസ്ഥാനിലെ സ്വാത്ത് ജില്ലയിലെ മിങ്കോര സ്വദേശിയായ ഈ പെന്‍കുട്ടി തന്റെ ബ്ലോഗില്‍ എഴുതിയ സ്കൂള്‍ കുറിപ്പുകളിലൂടെയാണ് ലോക ശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയത്.താലിബാന്‍ ഭരണം ചിറകുകള്‍ അരിഞ്ഞ ഒരു കൊച്ചു ശലഭാമായിരുന്നു അവള്‍ .അവളുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്ക ബാല്യത്തിന്റെ വേദന കലര്‍ന്ന കുറിപ്പുകള്‍ ബി ബി സി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതോടെയാണ് മലാല ലോക ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ വരുന്നത്.താലിബാന്‍ ഭരണത്തില്‍  മതതീവ്രവാദികള്‍ അടിച്ചമര്‍ത്തുന്ന ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളുടെ നൊമ്പരങ്ങളാണ് അവളിലൂടെ ലോകം വായിച്ചത്. താലിബാന്‍, സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മാനുഷികമായ അവകാശങ്ങള്‍ പോലും നിഷേധിക്കുകയാണ്.സ്കൂളില്‍ പോകാനോ,പൊതു സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടാണോ,തൊഴില്‍ ചെയ്യാനോ താലിബാന്‍ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ സാധ്യമല്ലെന്ന് വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.ഈ അവകാശ ലംഘനങ്ങള്‍ ലോക ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവരാനാണ് ഈ കൊച്ചു പെണ്‍കുട്ടി ശ്രമിച്ചത്.പാക് ഭരണകൂടം മലാലയെ ആദരിക്കുകയും മുന്‍ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി യൂസഫ് റാസ ഗിലാനി ബഹുമതിപത്രം നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. സമാധാന പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിനുള്ള ദേശീയ പുരസ്‌കാരം നല്‍കിയാണ് പാക് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ മലാലയെ ആദരിച്ചത്.അന്ന് മുതല്‍ തന്നെ താലിബാന്‍ തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ അവളെ നോട്ടമിട്ടിരുന്നു.ഒടുവില്‍ ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 9 നു സ്കൂളില്‍ നിന്ന് വീട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുകയായിരുന്ന അവളെ ബസ്സില്‍ നിന്ന് വലിച്ചു പുറത്തിട്ടു ഒരു താലിബാന്‍ തോക്കുധാരി കഴുത്തിനും തലയ്ക്കും വെടിയുതിര്‍ത്തു.ഗുരുതരാവസ്ഥയില്‍ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട മലാല സുഖം പ്രാപിച്ചു വരുന്നതായാണ് വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ .

സ്ത്രീകക്കെതിരെ താലിബാന്‍ നടത്തുന്ന ക്രൂരതകളുടെ കഥകള്‍ മുന്‍പും ലോക ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിച്ച ഒരു വിവാഹ ബന്ധത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒളിച്ചോടിയ ആയിഷ എന്ന പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയെ മൂക്കും ചെവികളും അരിഞ്ഞു കളഞ്ഞ,താലിബാന്‍തീവ്രതയുടെ മറ്റൊരു സംഭവം മറക്കാറായിട്ടില്ല.മൂക്കും ചെവികളും അരിയപ്പെട്ട ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ ചിത്രം ടൈം മാസിക കവര്‍ ചിത്രമായി നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു.അതിനു ശേഷമാണ്,  ശൈശവ വിവാഹത്തിന്റെ ഇരയായ 15 കാരിയായ സഹാർ ഗുൾ  എന്ന അഫ്ഗാനി പെൺകുട്ടിയുടെ കഥ മാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ വന്നത്.ഇത്തരം സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ മത തീവ്രവാദം സ്ത്രീകളുടെയും കുട്ടികളുടെയും അവകാശങ്ങളെ ഒട്ടും വക വെക്കുന്നില്ലെന്ന യാഥാര്‍ത്യത്തെയാണ് അടിവര ഇടുന്നത്.കുട്ടികളുടെയും സ്ത്രീകളുടെയും അവകാശങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന അന്താരാഷ്‌ട്ര സംഘടനകളും മനുഷ്യാവകാശ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും താലിബാന്‍ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ നടപ്പാക്കുന്ന കാടന്‍ നടപടികളെ അപലപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.പാക്‌- -അഫ്ഘാന്‍ മേഖലകളില്‍ പല ഭാഗത്തും ഇപ്പോഴും ഗോത്ര സംസ്കാരവും അതനുസരിച്ചുള്ള നിയമങ്ങളുമാണ് നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്നത്.ഇത്തരം നിയമങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്,മതത്തിന്റെ മേല്‍വിലാസം നല്‍കാനാണ് ഗോത്ര നേതാക്കള്‍ ശ്രമിക്കാറുള്ളത്.ഫലത്തില്‍ ,താലിബാന്‍ നടത്തുന്ന അതിക്രമങ്ങള്‍ ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ പേരില്‍ വരവ് ചേര്‍ക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.സ്ത്രീകളെ നിരക്ഷതയില്‍ തളച്ചിടുന്നതും അവര്‍ക്ക് സാമൂഹ്യ-രാഷ്ട്രീയ പങ്കാളിത്തം നിഷേധിക്കുന്നതും ശൈശവ വിവാഹവും സ്ത്രീധനവുമടക്കമുള്ള ദുരാചാരങ്ങള്‍പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതും ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ പേരില്‍ ന്യായീകരിക്കുന്നത് അംഗീകരിക്കാനാവില്ല. ഇത്തരം കടുത്ത നിലപാടുകളെ തുറന്നെതിര്‍ക്കാന്‍ പുരോഗമന വാദികളായ മതപണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍ മടിക്കരുത്.

യാഥാസ്ഥിതിക മതപണ്ഡിതന്മാരും മുല്ലമാരും സ്വീകരിക്കുന്ന സ്ത്രീ വിരുദ്ധ നിലപാടുകള്‍ ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ യശസ്സിനാണ് പോറല്‍ ഏല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നത്.കേരളത്തിലെ ചില യാഥാസ്ഥിതിക മതപണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍,താലിബാനെ പോലെ കടുത്ത ഫത്‌വകള്‍ നല്കുന്നില്ലായിരിക്കാം.എന്നാല്‍ ,മനോഭാവത്തിന്റെയും നിലപാടിന്റെയും കാര്യത്തില്‍ അവര്‍ താലിബാനില്‍ നിന്നും വിദൂരമാണെന്നു കരുതിക്കൂടാ.സ്ത്രീകള്‍ പള്ളിയില്‍ പോകുന്നത് മുതല്‍ സാമൂഹ്യ,രാഷ്ട്രീയ രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ പങ്കാളികളാകുന്നത് വരെ അവര്‍ മതവിരോധമായി ഇന്നും കാണുന്നുണ്ട്.ഏറെ അതിശയകരമായ ഒരു കാര്യം,പുരോഗമന മുഖംമൂടിയുള്ള "നവോദ്ധാന അവകാശികള്‍ "(!) ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ കടുത്ത യാഥാസ്ഥിതികമാണ് എന്നതാണ്.ഇത്തരം ആളുകല്‍ സ്ത്രീകളെ അടുക്കളയിലേക്കു തന്നെ തിരിച്ചയക്കുകയാണ്.കൈയും കാലും പോലും ഉറകളില്‍ പൊതിഞ്ഞല്ലാതെ പൊതു സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ സ്ത്രീകള്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു കൂടെന്നാണ് ഇവരുടെ നിയമം! മുഖത്താകട്ടെ,മൂടി നിര്‍ബന്ധവും!

മതത്തിന്റെ പേരിലുള്ള തീവ്രവാദം ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ഗുണം ചെയ്യുന്നത് സാമ്രാജ്യത്വത്തെയാണ്.ബിന്‍ ലാദിന്‍ ആണ് അമേരിക്കന്‍ സാമ്രാജ്യത്വത്തിന്റെ ദുഷ്ട ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുപരിധി വരെ പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി കൊടുത്തത്.മതതീവ്രവാദം ഭീകരതയായി വളരുമെന്നും അത് ലോകത്തിനു ഭീഷണിയാണെന്നും അതിനാല്‍ "ഇസ്ലാമിക ഭീകരതയ്ക്കെതിരെ" ലോകം ഒന്നിക്കണമെന്നും പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചാണല്ലോ,കഴിഞ്ഞ പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലെ യുദ്ധപരമ്പരയ്ക്ക് അമേരിക്ക സഖ്യകക്ഷികളെ ചേര്‍ത്തത്.സെപ്തംബര്‍ 11 ,വീണു കിട്ടിയ അവസരമായിരുന്നു അമേരിക്കയ്ക്ക്.അതിന്റെ പിന്‍ബലത്തില്‍ പശ്ചിമേഷ്യയിലെ തങ്ങളുടെ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ കൈപ്പിടിയിലൊതുക്കാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞു.സത്യത്തില്‍ ,അഫ്ഗാനില്‍ അമേരിക്ക നടത്തിയ യുദ്ധത്തിനു കുറച്ചെങ്കിലും തദ്ദേശീയ പിന്തുണ കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അതിന്റെ ഉത്തരവാദി താലിബാനും അതിന്റെ തീവ്ര മത നിലപാടുകളും ആണെന്ന് ഉറപ്പിച്ചു പറയാം.താലിബാന്‍ ഭരണത്തില്‍ അഫ്ഗാനികള്‍ വിശിഷ്യ സ്ത്രീകള്‍ അത്രമേല്‍ ശ്വാസം മുട്ടിയിരുന്നു എന്ന് വേണം കരുതാന്‍. .. ഈ സാഹചര്യം മുതലെടുക്കാന്‍ അമേരിക്ക ശരിക്കും ഉത്സാഹിച്ചു.നേരത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച,താലിബാനികള്‍ ഒരു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ മൂക്കും ചെവിയും ചെത്തിയ സംഭവത്തിന്‌ വന്‍ പ്രാധാന്യമാണ് പാശ്ചാത്യ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയത്.ടൈം മാസിക മുഖചിത്രം അടക്കം,കവര്‍ സ്റ്റോറി ആക്കി.ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റില്‍ പരതിയാല്‍ അഫ്ഗാനിലെ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ അവകാശ നിഷേധത്തിന്റെ നൂറു നൂറു കഥകള്‍ യൂട്യൂബിലും വിവിധ സൈറ്റുകളിലും കാണാം.അതില്‍ കുറെയേറെ അതിശയോക്തിപരവും പലതും അടിസ്ഥാന രഹിതവുമാണ്.

സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്കെതിരെ നടക്കുന്ന അവകാശ നിഷേധങ്ങള്‍ തുറന്നെതിര്‍ക്കപ്പെടണമെന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ സംശയമില്ല.അത് അഫ്ഗാനിസ്ഥാനിലായാലും പാകിസ്ഥാനിലായാലും ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ ആയാലും ശരി.അതേസമയം,ഇത്തരം സംഭവങ്ങളെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ആയുധങ്ങള്‍ ആക്കുന്ന നിക്ഷിപ്ത താല്പര്യം തിരിച്ചറിയാനുള്ള വിവേകവും ലോകത്തിനു വേണം.എന്നാല്‍,പാശ്ചാത്യ കോര്‍പ്പറേറ്റ്‌ മാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ വരുന്ന,സ്ത്രീകളുടെ അവകാശങ്ങളെ സംബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള വാര്‍ത്തകളില്‍ പലപ്പോഴും അവരുടെ സാമ്രാജ്യ താല്‍പ്പര്യം നിഴലിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.മതനേതൃത്വവും താലിബാനികളും സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മേല്‍ മതചിഹ്നങ്ങള്‍ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് ലോക ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ കൊണ്ട് വരികയും എതിര്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നപോലെ തീവ്ര മതേതരവാദികള്‍ ,മതേതര തീവ്രവാദം സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മേല്‍ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നതിനെ പാശ്ചാത്യ മീഡിയ എതിര്‍ക്കാറില്ല.ഒരാള്‍ക്കിഷ്ടമില്ലാതെ,ഒരു വസ്ത്രധാരണ രീതി അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നത് മനുഷ്യാവകാശ നിഷേധം ആണെന്ന പോലെ ഇഷ്ടമുള്ള രീതി തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാനുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും മനുഷ്യാവകാശം തന്നെ ആണ്.

ഹിജാബ് ധരിച്ചതിന്റെ പേരില്‍ മര്‍വ ശര്‍ബിനി എന്ന ഈജിപ്ഷ്യന്‍ വനിതയെ ജര്‍മനിയിലെ ഒരു കോടതി മുറ്റത്ത്‌ വെച്ച് ഒരു ജര്‍മ്മന്‍ പൌരനായ റഷ്യന്‍ കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരന്‍ കുത്തികൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയ സംഭവം 2009 ലാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്.എന്നാല്‍,ശര്ബീനിക്ക് ,ഈ ലേഖനത്തില്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടിയ മലാല യൂസുഫിനും  ആയിഷയ്ക്കും കിട്ടിയ സഹതാപം കിട്ടാതെ പോയത് എന്ത് കൊണ്ടാണ്? താലിബാന്‍ കൊലയാളിക്ക് ചാര്‍ത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ക്രൂര  പരിവേഷം ശര്ബീനിയുടെ കൊലയാളിക്ക് നല്കപ്പെടാഞ്ഞതെന്തു കൊണ്ട്? താലിബാന്‍ ഭരണകൂടം സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മൂടുപടം അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് ഫാസിസം ആണെങ്കില്‍ ഫ്രാന്‍സില്‍ നിക്കോളാസ്‌ സര്‍ക്കോസി ശിരോവസ്ത്രം കുറ്റകരമാക്കുന്നതും ഫാസിസം തന്നെ അല്ലെ?

പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നത്,മതതീവ്ര വാദികള്‍ നടപ്പാക്കുന്ന സ്ത്രീ വിരുദ്ധ-മനുഷ്യാവകാശ കൃത്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നേരെ കണ്ണടയ്ക്കണമെന്നല്ല.തീര്‍ച്ചയായും മതതീവ്രതയെ എതിര്‍ക്കുക തന്നെ വേണം.മനുഷ്യാവകാശം ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിക്കുകയും അതിനു വേണ്ടി പോരാടുകയും വേണം.അതേസമയം,തീവ്രവാദത്തെ പര്‍വതീകരിച്ച് മുതലെടുക്കാനും ആരെയും അനുവദിക്കരുത്.മലാല യൂസുഫ്‌ ആശുപത്രിക്കിടക്കയില്‍ നിന്ന്  ലോകത്തോട് പറയുന്നത്,ലോകത്ത് സ്ത്രീ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ദൈന്യതയെ കുറിച്ചാണ്.പാകിസ്ഥാനില്‍ അവള്‍ക്കു ആ  അവസ്ഥ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്‌ താലിബാന്‍ ആണ്.അഫ്ഗാനിലും ഇറാഖിലും പക്ഷെ,കണ്ണീരില്‍ കഴിയുന്ന ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് സ്ത്രീകളെയും കുട്ടികളെയും സൃഷ്ട്ടിച്ചത് അമേരിക്കയും സാമ്രാജ്യത്വ ശക്തികളുമാണ്.ഈ വസ്തുതകള്‍ നാം മറന്നു പോകരുത്.

Private schools in Pakistan's troubled north-western Swat district have been ordered to close in a Taleban edict banning girls' education. Militants seeking to impose their austere interpretation of Sharia law have destroyed about 150 schools in the past year. Five more were blown up despite a government pledge to safeguard education, it was reported on Monday. THURSDAY JANUARY 15: NIGHT FILLED WITH ARTILLERY FIRE

The night was filled with the noise of artillery fire and I woke up three times. But since there was no school I got up later at 10 am. Afterwards, my friend came over and we discussed our homework.

The Taleban have repeatedly targeted schools in Swat

Today is 15 January, the last day before the Taleban's edict comes into effect, and my friend was discussing homework as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

Today, I also read the diary written for the BBC (in Urdu) and published in the newspaper. My mother liked my pen name 'Gul Makai' and said to my father 'why not change her name to Gul Makai?' I also like the name because my real name means 'grief stricken'.

My father said that some days ago someone brought the printout of this diary saying how wonderful it was. My father said that he smiled but could not even say that it was written by his daughter.

WEDNESDAY 14 JANUARY: I MAY NOT GO TO SCHOOL AGAIN

I was in a bad mood while going to school because winter vacations are starting from tomorrow. The principal announced the vacations but did not mention the date the school was to reopen. This was the first time this has happened.

In the past the reopening date was always announced clearly. The principal did not inform us about the reason behind not announcing the school reopening, but my guess was that the Taleban had announced a ban on girls' education from 15 January.
This time round, the girls were not too excited about vacations because they knew if the Taleban implemented their edict they would not be able to come to school again. Some girls were optimistic that the schools would reopen in February but others said that their parents had decided to shift from Swat and go to other cities for the sake of their education.
Since today was the last day of our school, we decided to play in the playground a bit longer. I am of the view that the school will one day reopen but while leaving I looked at the building as if I would not come here again.

FRIDAY 9 JANUARY: THE MAULANA GOES ON LEAVE?

Today at school I told my friends about my trip to Bunair. They said that they were sick and tired of hearing the Bunair story. We discussed the rumours about the death of Maulana Shah Dauran, who used to give speeches on FM radio. He was the one who announced the ban on girls attending school.
Some girls said that he was dead but others disagreed. The rumours of his death are circulating because he did not deliver a speech the night before on FM radio. One girl said that he had gone on leave.
Since there was no tuition on Friday, I played the whole afternoon. I switched on the TV in the evening and heard about the blasts in Lahore. I said to myself 'why do these blasts keep happening in Pakistan?'

WEDNESDAY 7 JANUARY: NO FIRING OR FEAR

I have come to Bunair to spend Muharram (a Muslim holiday) on vacation. I adore Bunair because of its mountains and lush green fields. My Swat is also very beautiful but there is no peace. But in Bunair there is peace and tranquillity. Neither is there any firing nor any fear. We all are very happy.
Today we went to Pir Baba mausoleum and there were lots of people there. People are here to pray while we are here for an excursion. There are shops selling bangles, ear rings, lockets and other artificial jewellery. I thought of buying something but nothing impressed - my mother bought ear rings and bangles.

MONDAY 5 JANUARY: DO NOT WEAR COLOURFUL DRESSES

I was getting ready for school and about to wear my uniform when I remembered that our principal had told us not to wear uniforms - and come to school wearing normal clothes instead. So I decided to wear my favourite pink dress. Other girls in school were also wearing colourful dresses and the school presented a homely look.

My friend came to me and said, 'for God's sake, answer me honestly, is our school going to be attacked by the Taleban?' During the morning assembly we were told not to wear colourful clothes as the Taleban would object to it.
I came back from school and had tuition sessions after lunch. In the evening I switched on the TV and heard that curfew had been lifted from Shakardra after 15 days. I was happy to hear that because our English teacher lived in the area and she might be coming to school now.

SUNDAY 4 JANUARY: I HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL

Today is a holiday and I woke up late, around 10 am. I heard my father talking about another three bodies lying at Green Chowk (crossing). I felt bad on hearing this news. Before the launch of the military operation we all used to go to Marghazar, Fiza Ghat and Kanju for picnics on Sundays. But now the situation is such that we have not been out on picnic for over a year and a half.
We also used to go for a walk after dinner but now we are back home before sunset. Today I did some household chores, my homework and played with my brother. But my heart was beating fast - as I have to go to school tomorrow.

SATURDAY 3 JANUARY: I AM AFRAID

I had a terrible dream yesterday with military helicopters and the Taleban. I have had such dreams since the launch of the military operation in Swat. My mother made me breakfast and I went off to school. I was afraid going to school because the Taleban had issued an edict banning all girls from attending schools. Only 11 students attended the class out of 27. The number decreased because of Taleban's edict. My three friends have shifted to Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi with their families after this edict.
On my way from school to home I heard a man saying 'I will kill you'. I hastened my pace and after a while I looked back if the man was still coming behind me. But to my utter relief he was talking on his mobile and must have been threatening someone else over the phone.
